A Gender-Balanced Approach to Building Sustainable Futures Through Beekeeping in Nyaminyami Rural District

Under the Climate Smart Livelihoods program, we recently held successful Beekeeping Trainings in Nyaminyami Rural District, Ward 3 and 4 to empower local communities by providing them with sustainable income-generating skills. This initiative aligns with our mission to strengthen the capacity of local communities to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in a changing climate for improved livelihoods and wildlife conservation.

"We're introducing beekeeping in Nyaminyami Rural District, seamlessly complementing our human-wildlife conflict mitigation efforts and bolstering comprehensive conservation and community development," said Farai, WCA's Climate Smart Livelihoods Program Officer.

Local leaders, including the Chief's representative, Councilors, and Council officers, attended the training. Partners from the Forestry Commission, Agritex, and Utariri consortium supported the initiative.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this training was the overwhelming participation of women, signaling progress towards creating a gender-balanced community. Their active involvement highlights the importance of providing equal opportunities for both men and women to develop skills that improve their livelihoods.

The training covered essential topics such as the importance of bees to the ecosystem and economy. Participants were taught how to construct beehives and bee catchers, set them up correctly, and conduct regular checks to maintain healthy colonies. The training also focused on honey production from harvesting to processing, packaging, and marketing ensuring that participants have all the necessary skills to succeed in beekeeping.

Beekeeping offers financial benefits through honey sales and serves as a non-lethal human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategy. By deterring elephants from encroaching on fields and gardens, bees provide a natural solution to protecting crops, which benefits both farmers and wildlife. This dual-purpose approach supports local livelihoods while contributing to wildlife conservation.

Thank you to the Huchi Capital team for their invaluable training of the community in beekeeping, equipping them with essential skills for sustainable livelihoods and environmental stewardship.

Join Us in Creating Sustainable Change Through this initiative, we are helping local communities, especially women, to achieve economic independence while promoting conservation-friendly practices. But there is still more work to be done. We invite you to support our efforts by spreading the word or donating to our programs. Together, we can create resilient communities where people and wildlife can thrive together!
