Every year on May 20th, the world pauses to recognize the humble bee and its vital role in our ecosystems, food systems, and biodiversity. This World Bee Day, we at Wildlife Conservation Action are not just celebrating the bee, we’re celebrating the incredible strides our communities in Mola are making through beekeeping.

Last year, in a bid to promote sustainable livelihoods and conservation-friendly practices, we introduced a beekeeping project in Wards 3 and 4 of Mola. Beneficiaries were selected and equipped with two beehives each, along with training and support to get them started. It brings us great joy to report that some of these community members have already begun harvesting honey and selling it, thanks to market linkages we helped establish.

This initiative is not just about honey. It’s about empowering people to build resilient, nature-based sources of income. Beekeeping offers a path to improved livelihoods while protecting our environment. Bees are powerful pollinators, and their presence enhances crop yields, supports biodiversity, and fosters ecological balance.

The beneficiaries, many of whom are first-time beekeepers, are now proud honey producers, turning golden harvests into real, tangible benefits for their households. The extra income is helping families pay for school fees, invest in food security, and reduce reliance on environmentally destructive activities.

By supporting communities to embrace beekeeping, we’re helping them coexist with nature in ways that are profitable and sustainable. Each hive tells a story of transformation, a story of how small-scale, local solutions can make a big impact.

So this World Bee Day, we tip our hats to the hardworking beekeepers who are building a sweeter, more sustainable future, one hive at a time.
